Sonic the Hedgehog

In this live action (often dubbed as the “Sega” movement) comedy-adventure, Sonic the Hedgehog (aka Sonic the Hedgehog) – along with his friend Tails – take a trip to planet X, where they meet an assortment of weird and wonderful new friends who combine to form the superhero group known as the Freedom fighters. Armed only with powerful hearts capable of destroying almost anything that threatens their existence, they must defend the planet against a variety of fiends who are bent on destroying everything around them. Based on the long-running anime series, Sonic the Hedgehog (anime), is produced by Sega and featured animation, special effects, and a well-built plotline that’s been developed over the course of several years. The movie (made by Sega Toys and Sega Video Software) was released in the US and UK in January 1997, and its Japanese debut was delayed a few weeks as the company couldn’t find a screenwriter. SEGA finally came up with its lead protagonist, Sonic the Hedgehog, and the film did pretty well at the box office (though it ultimately failed to match its Japanese competitor Yu-Gi Oh! ).

An animated TV series based on Sonic the Hedgehog, entitled the Power Rangers, followed later in February and early March. It’s currently airing in Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, Spain, France, and Portugal. While the Power Rangers features many of the same characters (including the classic hedgehog), it’s likely that Sonic the Hedgehog (as well as the Power Rangers) will gain even more fans when the live-action adaptation becomes available some time in the future. In the meantime, you can enjoy the live-action adaptation of the hit children’s book/ animated cartoon, as well as the 2021 live-action film starring Sonic the Hedgehog himself.
